Level 1 English


Students in Level 1 at Mount Aspiring College get to choose their English course. 


This selection takes place at the start of the school year and sees the Level 1 teachers selling their programmes to the learners.  The courses are differentiated based upon teacher, challenge level and theme.  Once teachers have their students in front of them, they then design their assessment programme around their learners' needs (this is reflected in the credit table below). 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The English course is a blend of the academic, the practical and the creative.  You will work to develop the basic spelling skills necessary for accurate writing that is individual in thought and expression.  The course also involves the study of literature, personal reading, research, the media, static images, drama and oral work in a wide variety of everyday situations.

English is a compulsory subject for all Year 11 students.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will be involved in individual oral and written work designed to extend your imagination, to develop your powers of reasoning and analysis, and generally to gain confidence and experience in the handling of English in many forms through your personal response, and also through your participation in group activities.

WHAT SHOULD I HAVE DONE ALREADY?

English at Year 9 and Year 10 is the foundation for the year's work.

ASSESSMENT REGULATIONS:

The following is an indication of the assessment credit values for this course:

Level 1 Achievement Standards: 21 credits

  • 30% assessed externally
  • 70% assessed internally

Teachers will confirm course credit values based on the learners in their classes.

The standards offered are compulsory for the course that the student chooses.  This applies also to speaking standards; a skill-set that the Department values. Every student, at every level of the College is expected to complete a speaking assessment in front of their peers.


PLAGIARISM 

This is a matter that the Department approaches with a huge deal of seriousness.  We deem it unacceptable to present a piece of work that has someone else's voice in it and claim it is your own.  In all plagiarism matters the HOD is notified, so too is the College's NCEA coordinator, and the student loses the opportunity to gain a grade for the submitted piece and jeopardises the chance to get a resubmission.  With plagiarism undeniably being a breach of ethics, we treat matters with the utmost gravity as this is in the students' best interests as worldwide citizens.
