L2MOD - Mathematical Modelling

COURSE TITLE:

Mathematical Modelling

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course builds on the skills learnt in previous years by applying strategies to solve problems using a variety of financial, geometric and statistical skills. The overall aim of the course is to use geometry or statistical methods to explore relationships and probabilities in a variety of situations and also gain a basic understanding of financial investments and products available in daily life.

The course covers particular standards that will enable students to gain an overview of basic Mathematics and Statistics at curriculum level 7. There is also an emphasis on statistical investigations and probability.

Problem solving, developing logical reasoning and communication of concepts will be part of all content standards. Students are required to consider the context of problems in exploring the relationships occurring in data and summarise findings by relating the outcomes back to the context of the investigation.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

  • Fundamental network concepts
  • Statistical analysis methods to make an informal inference
  • How to carry out a probability simulation
  • Basic financial concepts such as insurance, banking and investment options

WHAT SHOULD I HAVE DONE ALREADY?

Level 1 Modelling and achieved at least 10 credits.

ASSESSMENT REGULATIONS:

You will be assessed by a combination of Level 2 Mathematics and Statistics achievement standards and Level 2 financial capability unit standards, with credits contributing towards the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA). There are a maximum of 17 Level 2 credits available. This course is not eligible for a subject endorsement. All of the achievement standards for the Year 12 Mathematical Modelling course will be assessed internally during the year.

There will be NO reassessment opportunity for the internally assessed standards for students who do not achieve the standard in the first attempt. If you can not attend an assessment because of illness, you must produce a medical certificate upon your return to school and you will be expected to complete the internal assessment on the day of your return to school.

MISSED INTERNAL ASSESSMENTS

Students who do not attend the internally assessed standards for reasons other than medical will not be given a reassessment opportunity. If you have a genuine reason (which must be supported by a medical certificate) for not being able to complete the assessment on the day of the assessment, then you are able to apply for an extension. This should occur prior to the assessment date, not after. Approach your subject teacher and make your case. Read the NCEA Student Handbook for more detail.

AUTHENTICITY AND APPEALS

These issues are dealt with by the college’s assessment procedures. Read your NCEA Student Handbook for details.

WHERE DOES THIS COURSE LEAD?

Exceptional students may be invited to take L3MAS as several standards in the course will prepare students for the content but generally, this course does not lead anywhere.
